About
Habitat Housing
Most Lincoln Habitat homes have a living space of of between 1,000 - 1,300 square feet and have 2 - 4 bedrooms depending on the size of the family. Most houses have one bathroom but, on rare occasions, two bathrooms to accommodate larger families. The average cost is about $65,000 (excluding the cost of the lot).
Families pay back the full cost of construction materials needed to build their home through a no-profit, no-interest mortgage. Homeowners must invest hundreds of "sweat equity" hours into the construction of their home. The sweat equity is used in lieu of a down payment. Volunteers in partnership with the homeowner family build the home.
Mortgage payments are recycled into the building fund (revolving fund), which is used for the construction of more homes.
Donations from individuals, corporations, churches and organizations dedicated to housing issues are used to purchase materials and pay for licensed labor.
