| What is
Habitat for Humanity? |
| |
| Habitat
for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking
to eliminate substandard housing and make decent shelter a matter of
conscience and action. It is our belief that everybody deserves a simple,
decent, safe place to lay their head at night. |
| |
| How it works |
| |
- Habitat
homeowners are chosen based on their need for housing, level of
income and willingness to partner with Habitat.
- Homeowners
must invest hundreds of "sweat equity" hours into the
construction of their home. The sweat equity is used in lieu of
a down payment.
- Volunteers
in partnership with the homeowner family build the home.
- Donations
from individuals, corporations, churches and organizations dedicated
to housing issues are used to purchase materials and pay for licensed
labor.
- Families
pay back the full cost of construction materials needed to build
their home through a no-profit, no-interest mortgage.
- Mortgage
payments are recycled into the building fund, which is used for
the construction of more homes.
- Habitat
homes have a living space of about 1,000 square feet. The average
cost is about $65,000 (excluding the cost of the lot)
